MY TASKS
IN KOMMERSANT
At Kommersant, I work as a Senior UX/UI Designer, and our small design team focuses on three main areas:

  • website interfaces
  • development of a design system
  • special project design
work on the website interface
Most of the tasks were related to improving the site pages. In order to improve metrics, user experience or simply make the UI neater, we looked at analytics, formulated hypotheses and then developed high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes to communicate and validate design solutions.
During the development process, I always collaborate with front-end developers to ensure the feasibility of designed interfaces.

As a result, the number of transitions from this block increased by an average of 24%
One of the cases is the redesign of the Main block on the main page in the desktop version. It was necessary to increase the number of transitions from the main page to other pages of the site, and we formulated a hypothesis that the problem could be solved by increasing the number of announcements in this block. But it was desirable not to change its height, so as not to lengthen the page.

The experience of competitors was studied, a number of redesign options were prepared and presented to the customer.
WORKING ON
A DESIGN SYSTEM
One of my very first tasks was to develop and maintain design systems, because before I arrived, all layouts were prepared in psd format, which was inconvenient and time-consuming for development. Also, due to the lack of a system, there were inconsistencies in the sizes of components, indents and line spacing. What was done:
  • review of all key pages of the site
  • all components were drawn in figma according to the code in CSS
  • all components were collected in component libraries, unnecessary components were removed
As a result, we collected templates for all blocks and pages of the site.
WORK ON SPECIAL PROJECTS
Kommersant also produces special projects—large multimedia stories with unique designs. They can cover resonant socio-political topics or take a more educational and entertaining angle. Journalists and designers collaborate from the very start, shaping the concept and logic of the mini-site together. Here, I’ll showcase a project on the poisonous ingredients of ancient cosmetics.

We tried to select historical heroes for each ingredient.
In the project, we often turn to the history of cosmetics of the 20th century, so the design is made in a vintage style, the corresponding colors and typography are selected. At the same time, this is a project about toxic substances, so we added acid green, and also added brutality due to the contrast, large shapes and sharp angles.
I am especially pleased to talk about this project because the idea for its creation belongs to me, and my fellow journalists supported it and began working on the content.
Results
  • Thanks to the redesign of some existing blocks, as well as the creation of new blocks and pages, conversion rates for transitions to another page increased;
  • The creation of a design system allowed us to organize all design elements and get rid of unnecessary elements;
  • The work of designers became faster and more “predictable” for programmers (in terms of using the same basic components), the work of developers also accelerated;
  • The number of elements and CSS styles on the site was reduced, some pages began to load faster;
  • Special projects created additional traffic
